There are two picks today.
#1: Take Texas Rangers (-136) on the ML against San Diego Padres risking 4.08% to win 3%.
(Hamels and Lucchesi must start for wager to have action.)
The Texas Rangers season-best 7-game winning streak was snapped yesterday afternoon as they fell 2-0 in the series finale with the Minnesota Twins. After a string of impressive offensive performances, in which they were scoring an average of 6.9 runs per game during their winning streak, the Texas bats struggled to get anything going at the plate as they were completely shut down by a dominating performance by Jose Berrios. They aren't a team that gets shut out often, so we expect they will be motivated tonight to get back on track and should have a solid opportunity to do so against the struggling San Diego Padres.
Joey Lucchesi will take the mound for the Friars tonight and he struggled mightily in his return to the rotation after a stint on the DL. He was clobbered for 4 runs on 3 hits, while issuing 2 walks in just 1 2/3 innings. This will be his first time attempting to navigate the dangerous Rangers lineup.
Cole Hamels will take the mound for the Rangers tonight looking to build on his most recent performance. He picked up the win in his last contest, giving up just a single earned run while striking out7 in a matchup against the Kansas City Royals. Although he hasn't piled up the wins this season, he has a 2.81 ERA and are holding opponents to just a .206 batting average in his last 10 outings. He has also enjoyed a ton of success against the Padres, going 9-2 with a 2.25 ERA in 17 career starts.
San Diego is arguably the worst offensive team in the league and has scored 5 runs or less in each of their last 14 road games. They suffered yet another deflating loss yesterday as they took a one-run lead in the 11th inning against San Francisco only to watch as their normally reliable closer, Brad Hand, served up two runs in the bottom half to blow the game. It was the Padres 7th loss in their last 8 contests. Look for the Rangers to bounce back tonight and win this one easily.
#2: Take Cleveland Indians (-122) on the ML against St. Louis Cardinals risking 3.66% to win 3%.
(Clevinger and Gant must start for wager to have action.)
The Cleveland Indians will look to keep their 7-game winning streak alive as they open a series with the St. Louis Cardinals. The Tribe will have a great chance to do so as they should have a distinct advantage on the mound as Mike Clevinger is scheduled to square off against John Gant
Clevinger has unquestionably hit his stride over his last three starts, improving to 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA after allowing one run and striking out 10 over 7 2/3 innings in last week’s 6-3 vicotry over the Chicago White Sox. The 27-year-old has struck out an impressive 21 batters over his last two turns and has 90 strikeouts in 99 frames this season. This will be the first time that St. Louis has seen Clevinger on the mound, which should give him the advantage in the first few innings.
With Michael Wacha being place on the DL, John Gant was recalled from Triple-A, which shows just how desperate the Cardinals must be for starting pitchers. Gant hasn't had a good showing in the Majors and is 0-2 with a 6.00 ERA in his previous 3 appearances with the club. Most recently he gave up 4 earned runs in 2 relief innings against the Milwaukee Brewers.
The disparity on the mound will be too much for the Cardinals to handle as Clevinger should be able to shut them down offensively. As long as the Cleveland bats are able to make some contact, they should do enough damage to Gant to come away with the victory.
