There are two picks today.
#1: Take Texas Rangers (+165) on the ML against Minnesota Twins risking 3% to win 4.95%.
(Colon and Berrios must start for wager to have action.)
Bartolo Colon will be looking to re-write the history books this afternoon as he faces off against the Minnesota Twins in the series finale. Colon broke a tie with Hall of Famer Juan Marichal and became the winningest pitcher from the Dominican Republic earlier this week and should he earn a win Sunday, he would tie Nicaragua native Dennis Martinez for the most by a pitcher from any Latin American country.
This record is something that Colon has been working towards and is a big reason the 45+ year old is still pitching in the Majors. His teammates have also expressed a concerned interest in helping their veteran pitcher achieve this milestone in his career and we believe that gives them a motivational edge in this contest.
The Rangers also come into this contest with a ton of momentum on their side, having won 7-straight games and are lighting up the scoreboard in the process. We expect their offense to continue producing this afternoon as they face off against Jose Berrios. Berrios has pitched well recently and did manage to win his only start against the Rangers, although he was somewhat fortunate in that contest. He allowed 5 runs in 5 innings yet his team managed to come away with the 6-5 victory. He has struggled against teams from the AL West, going 0-3 with a 6.23 ERA in 4 starts.
It's also worth mentioning that the Twins bullpen covered 7 and a third innings yesterday as Jake Odorizzi managed to record just 5 outs. If Berrios struggles and the Twins need to go to the pen early, that could give the Rangers yet another advantage to work with. This is a solid price to back the Rangers as underdogs.
#2: Take Philadelphia Phillies (+105) on the ML against Washington Nationals risking 3% to win 3.15%.
(Pivetta and Rodriguez must start for wager to have action.)
The Washington Nationals have dropped nine of its last 12 games and are averaging just three runs in that span, and have been outscored by the Philadelphia Phillies, 17-5 in this series. The heart of the Nationals order is simply not producing, including Bryce Harper, who is batting just .149 with one home run, five RBIs and 24 strikeouts in 19 games this month.
Meanwhile, the Phillies have quietly surged in front of Washington in the National League East standings with victories the last two days and have won nine of the last 12 overall to put pressure on the Atlanta Braves atop the division.
Jefry Rodriguez was absolutely dominated in his first major league start, giving up five runs on four hits and three walks over five innings against the struggling Baltimore Orioles. Baltimore is a team that has struggled with their offense all season long and for them to do as much damage to Rodriguez as they did is certainly an alarming site. The Phillies are seeing the ball well at the moment and we wouldn't be surprised if Rodriguez struggled once again in this contest. The Phillies have shown life at the plate recently and are an incredibly dangerous team when their offense is clicking. They have shown the ability to score runs in bunches and we expect that will be the case once again this afternoon.
These two teams are currently trending in opposite directions so there is value this afternoon backing the team playing the better baseball as they complete the unlikely sweep of the Nationals.
