There is one pick today.
Take Boston Red Sox (-108) on the ML against Seattle Mariners risking 3.24% to win 3%.
(Wright and Leblanc must start for wager to have action.)
The Boston Red Sox have to be frustrated with the way things played out in their 7-6 loss last night to the Seattle Mariners. Boston had a huge third inning, scoring 6 runs and taking a 3-run lead over Seattle. The Mariners chipped away and scored 2-runs in the bottom of the 8th on a Dennard Span pinch-hit double to effectively seal the victory. The Red Sox let this one slip away, as they left 10 men stranded on base and couldn't get the timely hits necessary to close the game out. We believe the frustrating end to last night's game will motivate the Boston players in this one.
The Red Sox should have an edge on the mound tonight as Steven Wright squares off against Wade Leblanc. Leblanc began the season in the bullpen, but since making the transition to the starting rotation, he has pitched well. He is 2-0 with a 2.45 era in eight starts and has allowed fewer than three runs in seven of them. He is a pitcher that throws mostly strikes, likely due to his time in the bullpen, however, that type of approach has cost him. He has served up 4 homeruns in his last 3 appearances and now face one of the most explosive offenses in the league. He has also struggled against the Sox in his career, sporting a 9.00 ERA in two career starts against Boston.
The Red Sox will send veteran Steven Wright out to pitch opposite of Leblanc. Wright is a knuckleball pitcher, which is one of the toughest pitches to prepare for. He is making his third straight start, and his first two were stellar as he gave up just six hits in 13 2/3 scoreless innings. He blanked Detroit on two hits over seven frames in a victory on June 5 and followed up by scattering four hits over 6 2/3 innings in a no-decision against Baltimore six days later. His scoreless inning streak currently leads all major league pitchers. He has also had success in his appearance against the Mariners, going 2-1 with a 1.32 era in three career appearances.
Steven Wright has been spectacular thus far this season and should be able to keep the Seattle offense in check. Meanwhile, the Red Sox should find some early success against Leblanc tonight. If they happen to get a lead once again tonight, we expect they will hold onto it and not allow another late game collapse as they did last night. These are favorable odds to lay with a team that should be motivated for revenge tonight.
