There is one pick today.
Take Atlanta Braves (+185) on the ML against Washington Nationals risking 3% to win 5.55%
(Foltynewicz and Scherzer must start for wager to have action)
Yesterday’s matchup between the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals was postponed due to rain. Originally it was scheduled to be Sean Newcomb and Gio Gonzalez taking the mound in this contest, however, both pitcher’s starts have been moved to Monday and instead, we will see Mike Foltynewicz square off against Max Scherzer.
There is no question that Scherzer still remains one of the more dominant pitchers in the league, however, we often believe that given as much weight as his name carries, the odds on backing his team when he takes the mound, is often heavily inflated. We believe that is the case once again in this matchup.
Even though they were expected to be the team to walk away with the division title this season, Washington has not been playing very good baseball and is once again severely underperforming compared to expectations. They are below .500 and have almost twice as many losses as victories dating back to mid-May. This is a team that cannot be trusted to win games, let alone win as nearly a 2:1 favorite, no matter who is on the mound.
Mike Foltynewicz also shouldn't be counted out of this matchup. He is a NL All-Star this season and even though his prior two starts ahead of the break were less than desirable, he has had a spectacular season thus far. He ranks fourth in the NL in ERA and fifth in strikeouts per nine innings (10.6), pitched to a 0.87 ERA while holding opposing hitters to a .146 average in nine turns before his final two outings. He has proven to be a capable pitcher and given how in disarray the NAts appear to be, he could be in for a solid outing this afternoon.
Atlanta has managed to win 5 of the last 6 meetings and currently leads the season series 7-4. At these odds, there is no question that the value lies with Atlanta.
