There is one pick today.
Take Oakland Athletics (+195) on the ML against Houston Astros risking 3% to win 5.85%
(Manaea and Verlander must start for wager to have action.)
The Oakland A's are a team that has been playing extremely well this season, especially recently, and yet still are not getting the respect from the oddsmakers that we believe they deserve. Oakland comes into this matchup having won 10 of their last 12 and six of those victories have come as underdogs, including last night's 2-0 victory over the Astros in this series opener. We believe they can win this matchup as well.
Justin Verlander has been extremely impressive since joining the Houston rotation, however, he has slightly regressed in his past couple of outings. Prior to coming over from Detroit, questions had loomed as to whether Verlander was still the pitcher that he once was, or if time had finally caught up with the former Cy Young winner. Being traded to Houston revitalized his career, however, we could be seeing the early signs of things starting to catch up with him. Over his last 18 innings, he has given up 11 earned runs, which is nearly a third of what he had given up over his prior 16 starts. If he is not sharp on the mound tonight, the way the A's bats have been seeing the ball, could make things difficult in this start.
Pitching opposite of Verlander will be Oakland's Ace, Sean Manaea. Manaea has been having himself quite an impressive season as well, having already thrown a no-hitter against another offensively explosive team in the Boston Red Sox and has been one of the more consistent pitchers on the year. Oakland has won 11 of his 18 starts this season, including going 6-3 with Manaea on the hill on the road. This should be a classic pitcher’s duel tonight and the winner could likely be determined by who makes the least number of mistakes on the mound.
There is no question that Houston will be upset about being shutout last night, however, this is a situation where the A's have thrived. They tend to keep their momentum going on the mound, having gone 5-1 in this situation this season. Even if Oakland falls short of picking up the victory, the value is certainly on them tonight and we believe the reward, should they win, heavily outweighs the risk.
