There are two picks tonight.
#1: Take Texas Tech +2 spread against Seton Hall for 3% of the bankroll.
These two teams are very similar; however, we believe the Red Raiders are the more balanced on both sides of the ball. They have been tremendous on the offensive side and have gotten production from nearly everywhere on the roster. They have received a total of 250 points from their bench already this season, which is second in the Big 12. As good as they have been on the offensive side, Texas Tech also has one of the top defenses in the country, holding opponents to the 4th-fewest points per game with 55.3 per contest, in addition to the lowest field goal percentage against at 33.5% and the 6th-lowest 3-point percentage against with 23.6% this season.
Both teams have gotten off to strong starts this season, with Seton Hall’s lone blemish on the year, being a 1-point loss to Rhode Island, while Texas Tech has been blowing almost everybody out and putting forth some strong defensive performances, including holding a solid Northwestern team to just 49 points in a 36-point, blowout victory. Given Seton Hall's struggles on a neutral site against a quality Rhode Island team, and also struggling for the most part in their most recent game (albeit a win) against Vanderbilt, we believe the wrong team is favored in this contest as these two teams meet on a neutral site in the Under Armour Reunion from Madison Sq. Garden.
Where Seton Hall has struggled, the Red Raiders haven't missed a beat whether playing at home or on a neutral site. They are simply lighting teams up and making it look effortlessly. While we do expect this to be a much closer game given the similarities between these two teams, we do have more trust in the Red Raiders offense to make the critical shots in the latter stages of the game to pick up the victory. Even if Seton Hall's defense manages to slow down the Texas Tech offense enough to somehow pull out a victory, we believe it will be by the narrowest of margins, in which case the points could prove to be valuable.
#2: Take South Carolina -1 spread (buy the half point) against Temple for 3% of the bankroll.
The South Carolina Gamecocks and Temple Owls square off in the second game of the Under Armour Reunion at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The Gamecocks come into this contest have won three straight while the Owls are coming off an 87-83 loss against La Salle on Sunday.
What was eye opening about that loss to Temple was that despite the Owls shooting an impressive 55.7% from the field and holding an 11-point lead at the half, they could not secure the victory. That speaks volumes about how laxed this team has been on the defensive side of the ball and that could hurt them tonight against a team that has been known for their defensive prowess.
Despite losing a lot of talent from their Final Four team a season ago, the Gamecocks have been playing extremely well for a team that was supposed to be in a rebuilding mode. Thus far this season they are averaging 75.5 points per game on 44.3 percent shooting and 35.8% from three-point range. What has changed from a year ago, however, has been the Gamecocks play on the defensive side of the ball. South Carolina has been holding their opponents to just 60.7 points per game on 39.5% shooting from the field and have not allowed any team to crack the 70 point mark this season and that could spell bad news for Temple tonight.
This is a classic battle between an offensive minded team and one that specializes on defense. At this point in the season, South Carolina appears to be the more balanced team on both sides of the ball. Given the fact that they have won 6 of their last 8 games on a neutral court, we believe they will come away with the victory tonight.
