There is one pick today.
Take Syracuse -3 spread against Maryland for 3% of the bankroll.
The ACC / Big 10 challenge invades the Carrier Dome tonight as the 6-1 Maryland Terrapins travel to take on the undefeated Syracuse Orange.
After a disappointing 19-15 record last season which held them out of the Big Dance, there is no question that the Syracuse Orange are out to prove that they are not the same team as a year ago. While they haven't necessarily proven their doubters wrong yet, they are certainly trending in the right direction. Tyus Battle is the player to watch for the Orange and leads the team in scoring with 20 points per game. Battle has been nursing a sore back and while he is still questionable to play, we don't believe he will miss the game. While Battle is the unquestioned leader of this team, Frank Howard is an underrated player who could start garnering national attention. Howard has really turned things on this season as he is averaging 15.8 points and a team high 5.2 assists per game. Oshae Brissett rounds out the double figure scorers for the Orange and is averaging 11.6 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. While the jury is still out on Syracuse at the moment, they have an opportunity to sway the public perception as they have a chance to knock off a quality opponent at home as they welcome the Terrapins to town.
The Maryland Terrapins are a team that is looking to find their identity after the loss of one of their key players in Melo Trimble, and thus far this season they have been figuring things out. Maryland is 6-1 on the season, which is a better record than we had projected for them at this point in the season. That being said, they did suffer a rather shocking setback at the hands of a 2-point loss to the St. Bonaventure Bonnies two games ago on a neutral court. Now, having to travel to the Carrier Dome, a place that has been extremely hostile and unforgiving for opposing teams to play, we wouldn't be surprised to see the Terrapins struggle once again against a Syracuse team that certainly has something to prove in this contest.
The Orange haven't been explosive on the offensive side of the ball this season, but they have made the clutch shots when needed to pull out victories. Where the Orange have been the most impressive, however, has been on the defensive side of the ball where they have held their opponents to just 57 points per game this season. They will also hold a significant rebounding edge over their opponents tonight. With those advantages, plus the fact that they are playing on their home court, we believe that is enough to allow the Orange to come away with a closely contest victory. Given the low point spread on this matchup, a Syracuse win should allow for the cover as well.
