There is one pick today.
Take Houston Astros (+106) on the ML against Oakland Athletics risking 3% to win 3.18%.
(Martes and Gray must start for wager to have action)
The stock of the Oakland Athletics has never been higher than it has been all-season after coming off a 4-game sweep of the AL East leading New York Yankees. It certainly was an impressive series for the A's considering ow they have struggled this season, but make no mistake about it, their performance that series is not something that we expect to continue, especially coming into this series with the league leading Houston Astros.
The A's received a quick shot of reality last night as their 4-game winning streak was snapped with a 4-1 loss in the series opener with the 'Stros. Make no mistake about it, this is a mismatch of a series. Oakland was outmatched (on paper) against the Yankees but managed to somehow surprise them. After seeing what happened to New York, we don't expect Houston to overlook Oakland in this series. In fact, a big reason why Houston currently leads the Majors with a 46-24 record and owns a commanding lead in the West, is because they don't overlook any team. They play each game as if it were a playoff game. Meanwhile, the Athletics have had an awful season thus far. They’re at the bottom of the division standings with a 31-38 record and currently 14.5 games behind the Astros.
The A's will send Sonny Gray to the mound tonight who will be looking for his first win in nearly a month. Gray is certainly not having the season many expect this season and has struggled with consistency for much of the year. We don't believe this is the particular matchup that will help him get back on track as this Astros lineup is extremely explosive and could cause problems for him on the mound.
The Astros will counter with rookie Francis Martes. The 21-year-old was brilliant in his lone start this season, pitching 5 innings, allowing just 3 hits and zero earned runs against a dangerous Texas Rangers' lineup. This may be only his second start in the Majors but Martes has shown a tremendous amount of skill and potential with a huge upside which could prove problematic considering that the A's have no experience against him and very little on tape. This could provide Martes with the advantage early on in this contest, and if that is indeed the case, could allow Houston to build an early lead.
The oddsmakers are severely undervaluing the Astros in this contest and putting way too much stock on Oakland's performance against the Yankees. This one will likely come back to bit them as Houston again simply find a way to win behind their offense.
