There is one pick today.
Take Philadelphia Phillies (+172) on the ML against St. Louis Cardinals risking 3% to win 5.16%.
(Hellickson and Wacha must start for wager to have action)
The Philadelphia Phillies have once against struggled this season, which has become customary for this team over the last couple of seasons. They are just 21-36 and currently occupy the basement of the divisional standings, however, they have been showing signs of life recently, having won 4 of their last 6 games while scoring an average of nearly 6 runs per game during that span.
The St. Louis Cardinals have long been a team that has been synonymous with winning, however, this season they simply have not been able to get things going. They are just 26-32 on the season and are currently in the midst of a season worst, 7 game losing streak. In fact, the Cardinals are just 3-11 in their last 14 games. Losing is not something that Mike Matheny or his team are accustomed to dealing with and given their recent performance, it's a fair assessment to say that the entire teams’ morale and confidence are at an all-time low which has translated to their play on the field.
The oddsmakers had listed the Cardinals as rather sizable favorites in this contest, however, we believe those are are based on both team's past accolades and performances. It certainly isn't indicative of how both teams have played over the last week which makes us believe that the Cardinals are being over-valued in this situation. They will not continue to lose forever and will eventually turn around their fortunes, however, at this point in time, this is simply too hefty of a price to value a struggling team at.
Much like our play on the Colorado Rockies yesterday as hefty underdogs against the Chicago Cubs, many of the same indicators are present for this matchup tonight. Philadelphia is playing the better ball at the moment and are much more evenly matched to the Cardinals than the odds suggest. If the Philadelphia bats can create contact and get some timely hits, they can not only keep this game close, but have a real possibility of pulling off the outright win. Michael Wacha has struggled this season and owns an embarrassing 11.92 ERA and 2.383 WHIP in his last 3 starts. The Philadelphia bats should be able to find success tonight and find a way to send the Cardinals to another heartbreaking loss. Like last night, the reward certainly outweighs the risk tonight as if we are correct once again with our assumptions, it will make for a rewarding payday for Phillies backers.
