There are two bowl picks today. Both were released back on Thursday!
1: Take Western Michigan +9 spread (buy half a point) against Wisconsin for 3% of the bankroll.
The Western Michigan Broncos managed to achieve the goal that they had set at the beginning of the season and that is break into one of the 6 New Year’s Bowls and they will square off against the Wisconsin Badgers in the annual Cotton Bowl.
While the Western Michigan Broncos are undoubtedly excited for a chance to play against another Power 5 conference on a National Stage, they will no doubt be ready for this matchup. Meanwhile, the same can't necessarily be said for the Wisconsin Badgers. The Badgers ran an absolute gauntlet this season facing ranked opponent after ranked opponent on their way to the Big Ten Title Game. If they had claimed the Big Ten Title, they would have put a ton of pressure on the Playoff Committee to let them into the Playoffs this season, however, the allowed Penn State to rally in the second half to not only dash their title hopes, but also relegate them to play a team from the smaller MAC Conference in their bowl game. Wisconsin has absolutely nothing to gain from this matchup and will likely come into this contest a bit indifferent while Western Michigan has everything to gain by pulling off a victory.
This Western Michigan team may be one of the best in the country that no one has really talked about. They completed the regular season undefeated and have one of the most balanced offenses in any of the Power 5 conferences. Zach Terrell is an experienced and veteran quarterback and has a true go-to dynamic receiver in Corey Davis. Jamari Bogan and Jarvion Franklin and a double-headed monster in the backfield and have shown their ability to carve up even the toughest front 7's that they have faced this season. While the Wisconsin defense poses quite a test, if they are not playing at their full potential, the experience of the Broncos offense should be able to move the ball with relative ease.
This is undoubtedly a David vs. Goliath scenario; however Western Michigan should not be counted out. They have yet to taste defeat this season and there is a reason for that. The odds makers and betting public certainly hasn't given the Broncos much of a chance with this line sitting at near double digits. That being said, we wouldn't be shocked if the Broncos managed to pull off the outright upset. If Wisconsin does manage to win this game, it will likely be by a late score which means the points will come into play.
2: Take Penn State +7 spread against USC for 3% of the bankroll.
The Penn State Nittany Lions should arguably have been included in this season's College Football Playoffs but instead have to settle for this matchup in the Rose Bowl with the USC Trojans! While many may expect that Penn State could come into this matchup a bit disappointed and uninterested since they were not included in the National Title picture, we believe they will actually use that snub as motivation in this contest.
This was a magical season for the Nittany Lions and was just the statement that head coach James Franklin needed to make. Enlight of all of the scandal swirling around Happy Valley over the last few years, this season showed that Penn State football is on the uptick. They have an extremely solid team who seems to epitomize the meaning of the word 'team'. They have been underrated all season long, even after defeating Ohio State in a head to head matchup and even after defeating Wisconsin to claim the Big Ten regular season title. There are still people out there that are underestimating this team and that is a dangerous proposition.
There is no question that USC is a storied program and next to Alabama, owns the most Bowl victories in program history. They have had an up and down season, however they managed to turn it on late in the season and even holds a win over one of the 4 playoff teams in the Washington Huskies. As good as USC has played, we aren't sure they will come into this contested as motivated as they need to be. We assume that they are going to act like many others out there and underestimate Penn State in this contest.
Trace McSorley is a future star in the making and has been unbelievable under center for Penn State this season. He has made good decisions and most importantly, has been extremely protective of the football. This season he has only turned the ball over once in every 113 pass attempts which ranks as the best in the country. McSorely also hasn't had to shoulder the load himself as he has one of the best running backs in the country in Saquon Barley to help carry the team. They are a balanced offense that seems to only get better as the game wears on. Currently they have been the best team in the country in point differential in the second half of games. Even if USC manages to gain a lead on the scoreboard early, Penn State is always dangerous up until the final whistle.
This should be an extremely entertaining matchup; however, we believe the oddsmakers simply haven't shown the Nittany Lions enough respect here. They've beaten top notch competition this season and will come into this matchup looking to put a stamp on what has been an incredible season. We wouldn't be surprised to see Penn State once again pull off the upset in this contest, but even if they don't we don't believe they lose by more than a touchdown and the points are likely to come into play.
