Take St. Joseph's -4 spread against George Washington for 3% of the bankroll.
Defending NIT Champion George Washington opens up Atlantic-10 play on Friday night when they head to Philadelphia to do battle with Saint Joseph’s. The Hawks managed to win both meetings last year and lead the all-time series 35-25, including an 18-8 mark at home.
St. Joe’s stormed out of the gates to start the season this year, winning their first three games. The competition got tough from their as they had to face the likes of Ole Miss, NC State, Temple, and Villanova, all which resulted in losses. Their 4-game losing streak forced a skewed perception of this team in the eyes of the betting public, however we don't believe they should be written off just yet. Since their losing streak, the team has rebounded by winning three of their last four with victories over Drexel, Princeton, and Lafayette. Most recently they suffered a road loss to somewhat unknown, but much improved Illinois State.
The loss to Illinois State has likely once again skewed the perception of this team, however it's worth noting that this same Illinois State team also holds victories over Tulsa, IPFW and New Mexico this season. St Joes has faced an extremely tough slate of teams already this season and while George Washington is no slouch, they certainly aren't the same caliber of competition as Villanova and Ole Miss. The fact that the Red Hawks have gone against some of the best will only help them in this contest.
Playing on the road in a conference opener is an extremely difficult task. St Joes has long had a history of having a significant home court advantage and we believe that will be the difference in this contest. Both of these teams are extremely similar in many ways, however the fact that the Red Hawks are at home will ultimately be the deciding factor. The Red Hawks are averaging nearly 8 points more per game on the home floor while the Colonials are averaging about 3 points less on the road. The biggest difference however has been the George Washington defense. A lot of talk has been made about how tough this team is defensively, however in games on the highway, they are giving nearly 6 more points per game on average! This will likely be a close game; however, St Joes will have the advantage and their ability to hit free throws at the end of the game should be the deciding factor in them walking away with the win and cover.
Take Memphis +1 spread against South Carolina for 3% of the bankroll.
The Memphis Tigers are 9-4 this season and they are coming off of a 4-point loss to SMU in their last game. The Tigers arguably should have won that game as they held the Mustangs to 38 percent shooting from the field, forced 13 turnovers and blocked nine shots but were outrebounded 44-25. Coach Tubby Smith knows where his team went wrong in that contest and you can believe that he will have his players crashing the glass with reckless abandon in this contest as he looks to avoid starting conference play 0-2.
South Carolina has had a quality start to the year despite losing their best player in Sindarius Thornwell, however this is not the same South Carolina team without him in the lineup. They have made their bones this season on the defensive side of the ball, however we believe that Memphis has just a little bit better all-around skill set than the Gamecocks. The real strength of the Gamecocks defense has been their perimeter defense as they have held their opponents to just 26.4% from beyond the arc which ranks first in the nation.
While their 3-point defense has been stellar, that is not likely to do them any good in this contest as the Tigers are not a very good three-point shooting team, making just 30% from beyond the arc. However, they have been stellar from the field, hitting their shots at nearly a 48% clip. South Carolina is also a poor rebounding team themselves and have been outrebounded in 4 of their last 5 games.
The oddsmakers ultimately had no choice but to set the Gamecocks as the favorites in this game simply because they are ranked in the Top 25. The fact that they set this game at nearly a pick'em speaks volumes on how they expect this game to play out. Memphis cannot afford to start conference play with a second loss and we expect they will shore up their issues rebounding the basketball and come away with the outright victory in this contest.
