After completely blowing the doors off their division this season, the Kansas City Royals have pretty much been coasting towards the end of the season in anticipation of the playoffs. Due to this somewhat lackadaisical mindset, they have gotten somewhat complacent and have been under-performing as of late. After coming away with the shutout win last night we believe that may have flipped the switch and will cause the Royals to continue playing the type of baseball that has gotten them to this point in the season. They are 5-1 this season after shutting out their opponents and we believe they will carry that momentum into tonight's contest.
As we had stated, the Royals have completely dominated their divisional rivals this season and tonight should be no different. They have had tremendous success against right handed pitching and have also managed to hit Indian's pitcher Danny Salazar hard in the past, especially guys like Alcides Escobar and Eric Hosmer. Meanwhile, the Indians have struggled against southpaws this season and even though Danny Duffy hasn't exactly had a repeat of his impressive season a year ago, he is still a quality pitcher who has shown his capability to shut down opposing offenses with his pitches.
Last night's loss by the Tribe pretty much all but eliminated them from postseason contention and also gave them a losing record! They dropped to one game below .500 and would need an extreme amount of help from numerous teams if they want to even have the slightest bit of hope in making the postseason. The Indians have been known to choke at critical times in the past this season including last night where they went 0 for 9 with RISP. Nearly everyone has given up on the Indians this season, including their fans. There were only 10,000 people who filled Progressive Field last night in what should have been an important division rivalry game. The fans have essentially given up and we believe the team won't be far behind. It should be difficult for this team to muster the motivation and excitement to go out and compete with one of the best teams in the league and that should lead to another win by the Royals in this series. The Royals are the better overall team in this contest and to get them at plus-money shows value.
Other notable facts to consider:
• Kansas City is 51-35 after a win this season.
• Cleveland is 16-20 in home games after a loss this season.
• Kansas City is 59-33 against right-handed starters this season.
• Cleveland is 20-30 against left-handed starters this season.
