There is one MLB and one college football pick tonight.
Take Virginia Tech at +14.5 spread against Ohio State risking 3% of the bankroll.
Only 3 teams have managed to defeat the Ohio State Buckeyes under the management of coach Urban Meyer and Virginia Tech is one of them. This will no doubt be a revenge game for the Buckeyes however it was around this time last year the Hokies managed to pull off the upset. The early part of the season has proven to be an extremely vulnerable spot for highly touted teams asking to lay a heavy point spread. The Buckeyes were impressive last year and they will no doubt be impressive once they get rolling again this season, however question marks do loom over this team. There's a chance that they come into this contest with a bit of a hangover after winning the National Championship last season.
Few teams were able to contain the highly potent Buckeye offense, yet Virginia Tech was able to do so holding Ohio State to just 21 points in the 'Shoe in a true road game. That's certainly a testament to how fundamentally sound Bud Foster's defense truly is. The defense should once again be strong this season with 8 returning starters back in the mix. Virginia Tech has tremendous strength up front with all 4 starting defensive linemen returning. This should be one of the better D-lines in the nation with all 4 starters having earned all-conference honors at some point in their career. The secondary is another strength of the defense and this unit will build around CB Kendall Fuller who is one of the top players in the nation at his position.
On offense had been where Tech really struggled last season and it will likely be a make or break season for Offensive Coordinator Scott Loeffler who has spent the past two seasons implementing his system with a young core of players. Many are predicting this is the season that Tech will break out offensively and with many key contributors return on offense including QB Michael Brewer, and 4 starters at receiver the Hokies have a chance to be one surprise teams this season.
The Buckeyes didn't have the best defense last season but that was truly overshadowed by how well their offense played. Big things are expected of the Buckeyes this season as many are already talking about another National Title but they will be without a couple of key players in this matchup, including the best defensive lineman in the league in Joey Bosa. Blacksburg is an extremely tough place to play, especially in a primetime game. Tech will no doubt be looking to prove what they did to Ohio State last season was not a fluke. Ultimately the Buckeyes will likely get their revenge, but we expect Tech to keep things close and stay within this generous number.
Take SF Giants on the Money Line (-104) against Arizona D-Backs risking 3.12% of the bankroll to win 3%.
(Leake and Corbin must start for wager to have action)
The San Francisco Giants have come limping into the final month of the season as they've lost 6 of their last 8 games and appear to be on the brink of missing out on a chance to defend their World Series Title from a season ago. The Giants essentially have the entire month to attempt to claw their way back into position to capture a possible post season bid, but for that to happen they must start winning ball games. The do come into this contest having won their last 2 games and look to have that momentum carry over into this series with the Diamondbacks.
Bruce Bochy's club has a good chance at picking up the win this afternoon when he send Mike Leake to the mound. Leake has performed well since coming over to the Giants posting a respectable 3.16 ERA through four starts since being traded, but has yet to pick up the win in a Giants uniform. He will certainly have his shot to do so this afternoon as Leake is 4-0 in 7 career appearances against Arizona.
The DBacks will counter with southpaw Patrick Corbin. Corbin is a quality pitcher, there is certainly no doubt about that, however the Giants have hit him extremely hard in the past. Corbin hasn't been able to defeat the Giants as his last win against them was back on Sept. 16, 2012, and he has gone 0-4 with a 4.79 ERA in six starts since then! This current group of Giants have a .316 batting average against him! He's also taken the loss in the last 3 straight. Arizona also comes into this contest having lost 11 of their last 16 games.
The Giants bats came alive in their final two games against the Colorado Rockies and we expect that momentum to carry over into this contest. The Diamondbacks have had an issue with their pitching recently and that likely won't translate well against a team that has hit left handed pitching extremely well this season. The Giants have owned the Diamondbacks at Chase Field in the past and with their season riding on the line, we expect the Giants to come away with the win in this contest.
Other notable facts to consider:
- Arizona is 15-22 in day games this season.
- Giants have won 23 of the last 30 meetings in Arizona.
- Arizona is just 4-19 when playing a team with a winning record in the second half of the season!
- Giants are 17-7 in their last 24 games against a team with a losing record.
