For the first time this season, we're passing on the midweek NFL game.

Monday Night Football improved our Over/Under streak to 39-18 and SPS has another 'total' pick tonight. This time however, it's on the baseball diamond where we own an unrivaled 85-62 seasonal record!

There is one MLB wager today and it is an afternoon one.

Take the UNDER 8 total runs in Toronto Blue Jays vs. Texas Rangers for 3% of the bankroll.
(Price and Gallardo must start for wager to have action)

The opening game of this ALDS is an extremely important one as it sets the tone for the series. Because of this, the Blue Jays send out their 'Ace', David Price, while the Rangers hand the ball to Yovanni Gallardo who has had great success against the Canadian club.

Both Texas and Toronto have been powerhouse offensive teams this season. They have the ability to plate runs with a single swing of the bat and their rotation sends up power hitter after power hitter making it extremely difficult on opposing pitchers to locate a "soft spot" in the lineup. That being said, both Gallardo and Price are savvy veterans who know what it takes to navigate a lineup and we expect both of them to be able to do just that and be able to limit the opposing offenses. The Toronto Blue Jays cashed in all of their chips at the trade deadline in order to acquire Price; this is the exact moment that they were banking on and we expect him to deliver.

With this being the playoffs, each and every game is crucial from here on, especially with this being only a 5-game series. This leaves very little room for poor performances and both teams will likely be a bit anxious and feel the pressure on the big stage in the opener. The oddsmakers have set this total fairly high simply because of the offense of both teams, but it's the starting pitchers that will likely be the stars of this matchup. Both Price and Gallardo have the ability to not only put in quality starts but to give their teams 7 strong innings! We wouldn't be surprised to see at least one if not both make a deep run in this contest.  If one was knocked out early however, it wouldn't be a big issue since both bullpens have been much improved since the All-Star break. Jeff Bannister and John Gibbons have a number of relieable relievers to call upon and won't hesitate to use them.

Both of these teams have had a few days off to rest and while rest and the healing of nagging injuries are a plus, hitters are at their best when they have consistent opportunities at the plate. They need to stay in rhythm to perform at their best and having a few days off could mean that it will take a few at-bats to get back into the flow of the game. We expect some players to be a bit rusty in the earlygoing and while many fans will be hoping to watch an offensive shootout, we believe it will be solid pitching and good fielding (error-free defense) that determines the winner of this contest. If both teams can avoid costly errors and unearned runs, this should fall under the set total.

Other notable facts to consider:

  • The 'Under' is 81-49 in day games for Rangers over the last 3 seasons!
  • The 'Under' is also 70-51 when Rangers play a team with a winning record over that span!
  • The 'Under' has gone 93-70 when the total is set at 8 or 8.5 runs in Texas games over the last 3 seasons!
